Always back the horse named self-interest, son. It'll be the only one trying
Edward Cummings will spend Tuesday afternoon contemplating running his Melbourne Cup hopeful Duais in Saturday’s Empire Rose Stakes over 1600m. Duais worked at Flemington on Tuesday morning and her recovery from that piece of work will help determine if the three-day back-up is the right path. “We haven’t made a decision yet,” Cummings explained. “The […]
There have been only six female Cup winners in the past 50 years, including Makybe Diva who won 3 times. The others were Jezabeel, Ethereal, Verry Elleegant, Empire Rose and Let’s Elope. Just six horses aged 7 have won it in the last half century: Verry Ellegant, Makybe Diva, Vintage Crop, Almandin, Rogan Josh and […]
Without looking, name 5 of the top 10 horses in the betting market for the Melbourne Cup. I bet you can’t. How sad is that? Once upon a time we pored over the Cup form and the markets for months leading into the race. Not any more. There is just 3 weeks and 5 days […]
Most people wouldn’t even know Gunstock’s name, which is no surprise because the lightly raced Mick Price and Michael Kent trained 4-year-old has had only six starts, and won just two of them, a maiden at Cranbourne, and last year’s Group 3 Norman Robinson at Caulfield. Don’t be deceived by his seemingly light race record […]
The Hayes boys have inherited great stables and facilities out at the modern day incarnation of Lindsay Park, and the full brothers are bred to be champion horse trainers, being by Colin out of David, so they have some great advantages in racing life that are the envy of many and admired by all. They […]
I was really impressed by the win of the Andrew Balding 5-year-old gelding Coltrane in a non-black type race during Royal Ascot week, and he backed it up last night with a cracking win in a Listed race over 3264m at Sandown Park. Since stepping up to 2 miles this bloke’s been a revelation, and […]
Nothing much other than the usual happened at the Mackay races yesterday. Chief Steward Cooke decided to sit on the interchange bench and let someone else chair the meet. The Chief Vet in the State Dr Martin Lenz decided to fly up to Mackay because he had nothing more important to do. Former QRIC Integrity […]
You may be wondering why the Melbourne Cup death of the horse Anthony Van Dyck is all over the racing news again, and why trainer Aidan O’Brien has come out and pointed the finger of blame at the Racing Victoria vets. It is because of the unrelenting research and work of a former top journalist […]
The Racing Victoria report into the death of Anthony Van Dyck in The Cup is a total and utter farce, a sick joke played upon everyone in the sport of racing. The simple fact is that this horse should never have been allowed to race, either of his connections or by the vets employed by […]
Remember Tiger Moth? He was the lightly weighted Northern Hemisphere 3YO that chased Twilight Payment all the way down the straight in last year’s Melbourne Cup, just two starts after running second to the high class Santiago in the Group 1 Irish Derby. No-one likes to talk about it, but the Cup wrecked Tiger Moth. […]
