Racing and Wagering Western Australia Call in John Dumesny To Fix the Handicapping ess

Harness Handicapping Review

Good afternoon,

Over the next year, Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA) will be conducting a series of reviews into harness racing in line with our purpose to ensure a sustainable future for WA racing. RWWA is committed to seeking and listening to the views of industry throughout the process of each review.

The first review will focus on the harness handicapping model and will be conducted by John Dumesny, entirely independent of RWWA.

As the former CEO of Harness Racing NSW and former CEO of NSW Harness Racing Club, John is a highly experienced harness racing administrator.

What’s the purpose?

To review the performance of Racing WA’s handicapping model alongside the National Ratings System and recommend a system that best suits Western Australian harness racing. Racing WA’s current handicapping model was introduced in 2018. After five years, sufficient evidence exists to measure it’s outcomes against those of the NRS.

The performance of each system, within their respective jurisdiction, will be assessed from both a racing and wagering basis, considering aspects such as racing population, field size, wagering growth and more. The results will form a recommendation on the suitability of one system that is to be used in WA in the future.

What’s the timeframe?

The review is expected to take six weeks, whereby John will prepare and present a recommendation to RWWA.

It will commence on 9 October and is expected to be complete by 15 November.

We invite suggestions and comments regarding harness handicapping to be submitted no later than Wednesday 25 October.

How can comments be submitted?

Please return any suggestions and comments to Industryfeedback@rwwa.com.au
