This is what City Limits used to look like, when it was fed.

Racing NSW has disqualified licensed stablehand and registered owner Brian Carey for 16 months after he was found guilty of failing to provide proper care to the thoroughbred horse City Limits.

City Limits, a six‑year‑old gelding, was found dead at Carey’s private property in Maryborough, Victoria, on January 12.

The gelding had sustained a leg injury during active work in October 2025 and had been spelled at Carey’s property under the supervision of people with limited horse‑handling experience.

Racing NSW stewards have charged Carey under Rule LR114(2)(a), which requires any person in charge of a horse to ensure it is provided with proper nutrition and water at all times.

Carey had pleaded not guilty but was found to have breached the rule after evidence and veterinary reports were considered during a stewards’ inquiry.

Stewards have determined the penalty based on the seriousness of the conduct and deterrence, and have disqualified Carey from holding a licence from January 21 until May 17, 2027.

Veterinary evidence presented during the inquiry has confirmed that inadequate care had contributed to City Limits’ death.
