We retold the infamous story of how Group 1 winning trainer Geoff Chapman was forced to change the name of his star filly Merkin to Giostra a few decades ago after the authorities discovered that a Merkin was a pubic wig worn by actresses and sex workers, a fact that caused some discomfort to the ostensibly upright members of the AJC committee, at least two of whom were known to frequent establishments where the latter group plied their wares, and their merkins.
