So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish

Good afternoon all, As I prepare to return to Australia and step down from my role as CEO of Harness Racing New Zealand, I wanted to take a moment to reflect and say thank you. When I first wrote to you on 1 July 2024, I spoke about enthusiasm, responsibility, collaboration, and a commitment to progress. I made it clear that I didn’t want to be judged on what I said I would do but on what we would achieve together. As I leave, I genuinely trust that I have delivered on that intent. We haven’t solved every challenge, no one ever does in a role like this but I believe we have made meaningful progress. More importantly, I believe we have shifted mindset, built momentum, and laid foundations that the industry can continue to build on. Leading this industry has never felt like just a job to me; it has been a responsibility I have been proud to carry every single day, and one I will always be deeply grateful for. What has stood out most during my time here is the people. The Kiwi industry has something that cannot be manufactured, passion. It exists at every level, from participants to administrators, from owners to fans and importantly, within the incredible volunteer network that underpins so much of our sport. The contribution of volunteers across clubs and communities is nothing short of remarkable. They are the heartbeat of harness racing in New Zealand, and their commitment, often behind the scenes, is something the entire industry should be immensely proud of. I also want to acknowledge and thank the team at HRNZ. Their professionalism, resilience, and commitment to the industry have been outstanding. In particular, I would like to recognise Leanne Holdem, Executive Assistant & Board Secretary, for her exceptional support. Leanne’s dedication, attention to detail, and unwavering professionalism have been invaluable to me personally and to the organisation as a whole. I want to sincerely thank you all for the support, the conversations, the challenges, and the hospitality shown to Nikki and I during our time in New Zealand. We have felt incredibly welcome, and that is something we will always remember. While I may be stepping away from this role, harness racing will always remain close to me. I will continue to follow the industry with great interest and pride, and I look forward to seeing it build on the opportunities ahead.
