On Saturday afternoon at Eagle Farm jockey Robbie Fradd pummelled Tyzone with his whip 16 times, hitting on the rump, the head, the neck, and in consecutive strides.
Fradd’s vigour won Tyzone the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, its owners a $200 000 prize, and him a minimum of $10 220 in riding fees.
The Stewards fined him $500 for the 11 extra strikes.
Yesterday at Doomben jockey Ryan Maloney used the whip on Toucan Sam 7, maybe 8, times before the 100 metre mark, and least 2 or 3 uses of the stick were real soft too.
Maloney won a midweek BM65, his owners a $19 800 cheque, and himself a fee of $1210.
The Stewards fined him $300 for the 2-3 extra strikes.
Both jockeys have similar records under the whip rule.
How the hell does this work, and how on earth can it be fair?
Are we on Candid Camera or something?
Is the joke on us?
Or are we the joke?
The jury is out.
